This northern NSW riverside town has been a popular rest stop for travellers on the Highway #1, but a new highway is set to bypass the town. The project was about promoting this river park for such travellers as a destination rather than a convenience. Practising in association with Local Architect South Coast, and within a design team of small operators, we created a landscape and set of buildings that direct the focus to the Richmond river. The community building and amenities are raised on a podium to mitigate flooding and provide overview of the local area. The local council took over the construction management of the project and unfortunately much of the design sensibility and sensitivity didn’t eventuate.
